Arab Emirates Publish Historical Arabic Dictionary

Scientists from the United Arab Emirates talked about working on the publication of the “Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language”.

At the Festival of the Arabic Language and Culture, held in Italian Milan, Dr. Mohammed Safi Al Mosteganemi, Secretary General of the Academy of the Arabic Language of the Emirate of Sharjah, informed his colleagues about the progress on the “Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language”.

The scientist said that the book is being published under the direction of Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad al-Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah, and that it will "mark a new era for the Arabic vocabulary." Dr. Mohammed described the dictionary as a “great work” representing the collective memory of the Arab world and describing its news, literature and history. ”

Abdullah Hassan al-Shamsi, Consul General of the United Arab Emirates in Milan, noted that the project does not just indicate a contribution to the development of the language. "Our participation implies the intention to correct the confusion and misinterpretation of foreign culture, especially on an international scale, which leads to the marginalization of the role and influence of these cultures," he added.

According to the UAE news agency WAM, more than 300 Arab scholars and linguists, together with the Union of Academies of Arabic Scientific Language (Cairo, Egypt), are working on a dictionary that will describe the historical development of the Arabic language and culture. The book will describe the chronicle of the Arabic language and culture of the last 17 centuries in three stages of research - old inscriptions, the Semitic branch of languages with an emphasis on Arabic, and the practical use of the language. It will cover five eras: the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods, the history of separatist dynasties, the era of the Mameluk Sultanate and modern history.
