Dubai's traditional markets get a new look

The Dubai Municipality has completed the renovation of Dubai's traditional markets.

The Dubai Municipality has completed the renovation of Dubai's traditional markets in the Deira area. In total, more than 220 historical building facades received a new look. The surrounding city blocks were also transformed.

The work was carried out as part of the program for the preservation of historical heritage and architectural monuments. According to the municipality, the fact that Dubai has now become a global hub for business and trade with glass and concrete skyscrapers does not detract from the importance of traditional markets where trade and entrepreneurship sprang up.

Renovation took place in two stages. On the first - an information center was built at the entrance to the Grand Souq market and next to the Al Ras metro station. Sun visors and benches were installed, floors and ceilings were repaired. A traditional marina was later built in front of the Shindagha area and a bus stop for tourists.

The municipality has unveiled new plans for the development of territories in the areas of Deira and Bur Dubai. The floors will be repaired, lighting poles installed and a mobile application launched with a guided tour of the market.

It is worth recalling that the traditional market in the Deira area was the first bazaar in Dubai, opened in 1850 on the shores of Dubai Bay: due to the easy access in the water, goods came from the cargo ships arriving from Africa and India. Today, souvenirs, spices, perfumes and fabrics are sold on the market. The market was last renovated in 1998.
