Vertical miracle

Text: Elena Grunitz

THE TALLEST BUILDING IN THE WORLD, A UNIQUE ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE, A GREAT BUILDING .... ALL THESE TITLES ARE THE MAIN SIGHTSEEING AND THE PRESENT ICON OF ANY SKY SCRAPER BOURGE CHALIFA.

Unrivaled in size, the skyscraper was opened on January 4, 2010. Since then, this "vertical city" has attracted a huge number of people. But not only exotic lovers come to admire the giant of the desert. Entrepreneurs, as well as buyers interested in elite type investments from all over the world, are eager to acquire real estate in it or rent an office. What to be surprised - Bourge Khalifa is one of the most prestigious addresses on the planet.

Higher, Higher ...

The construction of this giant took 6 years and 1.5 billion dollars. It is curious that even after the foundation was laid, the engineers did not yet know what height the building would be, nor what the upper floors would look like. Initially, the height of the tower was planned at 510 meters - enough to break the Taipei 101 record. But in the process it became clear that the foundation laid is so strong that it can withstand more weight. The project was first corrected at 610 meters in height, then at 700, and finally at 828. In principle, the margin of safety would have made it possible to reach a kilometer, but in Arabic culture, the number 8 is considered lucky, so the choice was stopped at that height.

The builders expected that after the completion of the main phase of the construction of the building, the whole structure would fall into soft sandy soil by half a meter, but so far the Bourge Khalifa has “decreased” by only 75 millimeters - an excellent result for a building with a net weight of 500,000 tons!

Desert flower

Designing and erecting the world's tallest building in extreme climatic conditions, engineers faced many problems, the solution of which required not only knowledge and skills of the highest level, but also ingenuity, innovative thinking and sometimes courage. The architecture's new Y-shaped base, resembling the desert flower of Gimenokallis, allows it to withstand the destructive power of desert winds. During the strongest gusts of wind, the amplitude of the wobble of the top of the antenna is only one and a half meters, which at a height of 828 meters is not much. So those who during sandstorms think: “What if it falls?” Can be calm - it will not fall and will not break.

Winning synergy

High temperatures and humidity, of course, were provided when designing a skyscraper. In addition to creating one of the most complex air conditioning systems in the entire history of construction, the question arose: what to do with 160,000 liters of condensate per day? The solution to this problem was the creation of another mega-project - the world famous Dubai Fountain (Dubai Foutain). All condensate produced by Bourj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall air conditioners is used for daily water-music performances.

The creation of the fountain was entrusted to the California firm WET, which built a similar fountain at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. Equipped with 6,600 lights and 50 color spotlights, consisting of five parts with a total length of 275 meters and a cost of 217 million dollars, Dubai Fountain is one of the main attractions of the city.

The combination of classical and modern music with a unique play of movable fountain jets, the height of which reaches 150 meters, and the lights create an unforgettable performance against the backdrop of the world's tallest skyscraper.

Armani Hotel: inside view

Bourges Khalifa holds another world record - the first hotel, personally designed by fashion designer Giorgio Armani. From the interior layout to the color of towels in the bathroom, the designer personally created every detail of the interior of the rooms. The developer of EMAAR has chosen Re Giorgio, King Giorgio, as Italians call it, for a reason. The minimalist and at the same time glamorous style of Armani perfectly combines with the image of the world's tallest skyscraper and reproduces its essence in every detail. Natural materials and colors, straight lines, the absence of any pretentious elements - only elegance and sophistication. The design of the hotel is reflected in one of the basic principles of Armani's work: "Less is more."

According to the designer himself, the interior of the rooms was created for a person, and not for the design itself. Dim lighting, the absence of paintings or any other decorations on the walls, calm colors - all this allows the guest to concentrate on himself, and not on unnecessary details of the situation. Fresh flowers, which are part of the interior, are grown in the hotel’s flower shop specifically for this purpose. And the marble used in the design was kept under the ice for nine months to give it a special shine.

The rooms do not have doors as such, only sliding panels. Behind them are built-in wardrobes, cabinets and shelves, a kitchen, a bar, televisions, and other rooms. So the guests usually spend their first hours in the room studying and remembering what is hidden where.

How to live in a "vertical city" Living or having an office in the world's tallest skyscraper is certainly very prestigious and not cheap. The EMAAR developer does not publish the names of its customers, but one of them, the Indian billionaire and CEO of NMC (New Medical Center) R.B. Shetti himself, boasted in an interview with the Indian newspaper The Economic Times that he had acquired "a huge area of two floors in the tallest tower in the world "(completely the 100th and 101st floors) and that" there is no more prestigious address in the world than R.B. Shetti, Bourges Khalifa 100, Dubai ". According to rough estimates, these 2 floors cost Shetty $ 25 million.

Of course, a more "modest" option is also possible. Renting an apartment (The Residences) with two bedrooms and a living room on the lower and middle floors costs about $ 5,000 per month. In one of these apartments and lives Lucia Messina, the wife of an Italian top manager, who agreed to share her impressions of life in a "vertical city".

About prestige: “Of course, living in the world's tallest skyscraper is a status symbol. Especially for my husband, who goes around in certain circles and can invite important partners or clients to his house in Bourge Khalifa for coffee or play tennis with them court in the park overlooking the fountains, and then relax in the Residence Lounge on the 123rd floor and unobtrusively discuss business issues. "

About amenities: “Direct connection to The Dubai Mall is an indisputable plus. When I go grocery shopping at Waitrose, they bring me a full cart directly to my home. My doctor also works at the Medicallinic Dubai Mall, not to mention shopping, entertainment and everything else, which can be found in the largest shopping center in the world where I feel at home. Of course, there is a standard set, such as a gym and pool on the 76th floor, and tennis courts. The only thing in The Club, where there are several sports halls, swimming pools and SPA - entrance is paid there, but other services are at the highest ashne free. "

About security: “There is nowhere without a coded card. An external entrance, an internal entrance, an entrance to the garage, using the elevator - all this is only if it is available. There is a huge amount of security both inside the building and outside. If guests come to us, then first they call from an outside post, then from the hall, then they bring the guest to the right elevator, press the necessary button and only after that they transfer the visitor “from hand to hand.” Here everywhere there are video cameras - in corridors, in elevators, in the gym.

When we first arrived here, we immediately conducted safety training in case of fire or earthquake. In our case, since we live only on the 28th floor, in a fire you need to go down the stairs. And for those who live higher, there are security bunkers about every 25 floors where they access by specially equipped emergency elevators and where they have to wait until firefighters or technical personnel come after them. "

About the service: “With any minimal problem, one call to the concierge is enough. After that a whole team appears to fix the problem, and then they ask again 10 times if everything is in order. Everyone is very friendly and professional - this is part of their work. The concierge is like- he told me that in total about 1,200 people work in Burj Khalifa. "

About privacy: "Despite the huge number of staff, I feel quite secluded. The corridors on the floors have doors that divide the floor into sections. It is always very quiet there, the clinics try to be invisible, working quickly and unobtrusively. Neighbors? Oddly enough, there is no such thing: "Oh yes, we are here in the most unusual building in the world, let's be friends with families! ". Each on its own. Just what I wanted after the noisy neighbors in Italy, who poked their noses everywhere.

Downtown - World Prestige

Bourges Khalifa is not only a thriving enclave with its own lifestyle, called the “living miracle”. This tower is part of one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in the world - Downtown Dubai with an area of 2 square kilometers. The Downtown Development Project provides for the construction of a unique cultural complex called Art Dubai, which includes the Museum of Modern Art, the first Dubai Opera House, as well as various exhibition galleries and design studios. In addition, the project includes two new hotels, a wide selection of entertainment and a number of residential apartments. Another major innovation will be the expansion of The Dubai Mall with the addition of 93,000 square meters of retail and leisure space.

A city that never rests on its laurels, a dynamic and irresistibly growing metropolis - our indefatigable Dubai!

BURJ KHALIFA WORLD RECORDS

  • The tallest structure in the world ever built on Earth (828 meters), which corresponds to the three Eiffel towers. Prior to this, the Warsaw radio mast (646.38 meters) was the record holder for height.

  • The highest architectural structure in the world. Before that, she was Taipei 101 (508 meters) in Taipei, Taiwan.

  • The building with the largest number of floors is 200, 160 of which are residential, which in turn is also a record that used to belong to the International Commerce Center in Hong Kong (118 floors).

  • The highest observation deck in the world (124th floor).

  • The world's highest supply of building concrete (605 meters).

  • The highest restaurant in the world (At.mosphere, 122nd floor).

  • The highest pool in the world (76th floor).

BURGE OF THE KHALIFA: LOVELY FACTS ABOUT CONSTRUCTION AND NOT ONLY

Bourges Khalifa is an environmentally friendly project. The steel structure of the upper floors of the tower is made of recycled metal obtained from the ruins of the old Palace of the Republic in Berlin.

For the construction of Bourges Khalifa, a special brand of concrete was created that can withstand temperatures up to +40. But in the summer, concrete anyway dried up in a submarine pipe, not reaching its destination. Therefore, it was necessary to work only at night, and ice was added to the concrete mixture in order to somehow cool it.

During construction in 2007, the skyscraper was nearly left without windows. The Swiss company, which received an order for the manufacture of 24,830 window panels, suddenly went bankrupt, and the EMAAR developer had to urgently create a new company exclusively for this purpose. After which the windows were made, and construction continued according to plan.

The spire of the tower, 136 meters long, was made inside a skyscraper during the construction process. When it was finally installed with all the difficulties involved in this complex process, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister, Vice President of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, decided to install 7 spotlights on the spire, at a height of 800 meters, as a symbol of seven Emirates. To do this, it was necessary to drill 7 corresponding plate-sized holes. None of the builders decided on this improvisation at such a great height. After a long search around the world, a specialist was finally found who agreed to take a chance for a lot of money. When he climbed onto the spire, he exclaimed: “My life is dearer to me!”, After which he went home. In the end, the person responsible for the exterior cladding of the building volunteered, holes were drilled and spotlights installed.

The name of the tower was changed on the day of the inauguration. Prior to this, the project was known as Bourge Dubai.

But during the 2009 crisis, the funds for the construction were over, and His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, came to the aid of a neighbor. The only condition for providing the required amount with 11 zeros was the perpetuation of the name of the Caliph, which was done. The capacity of Bourges Khalifa is 12,000 people, and the shelf life of the building is 100 years. The antenna of the skyscraper is visible at a distance of 95 kilometers in good weather.
