Dubai taxis begin to charge toll roads

Starting on January 15 of this year, Dubai taxis began to levy additional Salik tolls on passengers traveling on toll roads. The program is installed on all 8000 machines.

According to the Dubai Committee on Roads and Transport (RTA), this measure is aimed at reducing congestion on the main Dubai highway - Sheikh Zayed Highway, where today there are two paid sections. When traveling for each of them, an additional charge of 4 dirhams (US $ 1.1) is charged. In addition, Salik gates are available at the entrance to the Al Maktoum and Al Garhud bridges.

The department explained that passengers who do not want to overpay for the trip may ask the taxi driver to choose an alternative route. In addition, the innovation should encourage residents and guests of Dubai to use the metro more often. It is worth recalling that in July 2007, the RTA already tried to enter a fee for the Salik system in manual mode, but already in December 2008 it was canceled due to numerous passenger complaints. Now this process has become fully automated.
